Description
Sunderkand by Goswami Tulsidas is a chapter from the Ramcharitmanas, an epic poem that retells the Ramayana in Awadhi. It focuses on the heroic deeds of Hanuman and his devotion to Lord Rama. The word “Sunder” means “beautiful,” and this section is considered beautiful because of its inspiring themes of faith, courage, and devotion.
The story begins when Hanuman and other members of the monkey army are searching for Sita, who has been abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. Hanuman learns that Sita is being held captive in Lanka. With Lord Rama’s blessings, Hanuman decides to cross the vast ocean to reach Lanka. Using his divine powers, he leaps over the sea, overcoming obstacles like a demoness and a giant sea creature along the way.
When Hanuman arrives in Lanka, he shrinks his form to enter the city unnoticed. He finds Sita in Ashok Vatika, a grove where Ravana is pressuring her to marry him. Despite her suffering, Sita remains steadfast in her devotion to Rama. Hanuman reveals himself to Sita, giving her Rama’s ring as a token of his assurance that Rama will rescue her. In return, Sita gives Hanuman her ornament to pass on to Rama.
