Description

The Shri Ramcharitmanas is a 16th-century Indian epic poem composed by the revered poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas. Written in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi, it retells the story of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, focusing on his ideals, virtues, and the triumph of good over evil. The work is widely regarded as a spiritual and literary masterpiece, transcending religious and cultural boundaries.

Divided into seven books (Kands), the Ramcharitmanas narrates Lord Rama’s journey from his birth to his coronation as the king of Ayodhya. The seven Kands are:

  1. Baal Kand – Depicts the childhood of Lord Rama and his marriage to Sita.

  2. Ayodhya Kand – Explores Rama’s exile and the sacrifices made by his family.

  3. Aranya Kand – Chronicles Rama’s journey through the forest and Sita’s abduction by Ravana.

  4. Kishkindha Kand – Focuses on Rama’s alliance with the monkey king Sugriva and Hanuman’s devotion.

  5. Sundar Kand – Highlights Hanuman’s journey to Lanka and his heroic deeds.

  6. Lanka Kand – Details the battle between Rama and Ravana, culminating in Ravana’s defeat.

  7. Uttar Kand – Describes Rama’s return to Ayodhya and his reign, emphasizing dharma and justice.

The Ramcharitmanas emphasizes values like devotion, humility, truth, and compassion. It portrays Rama as the ideal son, husband, and king, and Sita as the epitome of virtue and strength. Hanuman’s unwavering devotion to Rama symbolizes selfless service and surrender to God.
